“Are You Throwing Money Out the Window by Cutting Traditional Triangle-shaped Cakes?”
Everytime there’s a party, a birthday, you look at that colorful and attractive cake, and you just want to eat it right away. And then finally, it’s time to have the cake, carefully cutting triangular slices, placing them neatly and enticingly on a small plate, and then inviting everyone to eat. Yes, cutting the cake into triangular pieces seems to be a habit, a tradition, and almost a standard.

From generation to generation, I see my mom cutting triangle-shaped pieces and I follow suit, my sister does the same and nobody in our family ever thinks that this cutting method is completely wrong. If you pay attention, you will notice that if a cake is not consumed completely and is left in the refrigerator for a few days, it will become dry and no one wants to eat it anymore. It’s all because of the way we cut the cake, completely wrong.
In fact, according to mathematician Alex Bellos, there is a smarter way to cut the cake that won’t make it dry. Instead of cutting it into small triangular pieces, you should cut it straight down the middle of the round cake with 2 knife lines, creating long rectangular slices. Then you take out those slices, divide them among everyone, and then join the two remaining halves together into a round shape and put them in the refrigerator if there’s any left.

This is actually very important, not just about the appearance. When you cut it this way, the cake can be kept for a week without getting dry like when you cut it into triangular pieces. After that, whenever you want to eat, you just need to cut the 2 knife lines in the middle like the first time you cut the cake, and then join the cake together to recreate the original round shape. Repeat this process until the cake is gone.

Many people, after trying this new cutting method, exclaimed that this method has “changed their lives”. Clearly, they can continue to enjoy delicious pieces of cake afterwards without regretting throwing away dry leftovers. Clearly, it’s a waste, like “throwing money out the window”.
This is probably something that everyone knows but nobody wants to change. If you want to save your money and not eat dry cake, make the change right away.
